The last year has been a year of great career changes and leaps for me. Now that things are getting under control, my interests in my favorite music has returned.
Lately this video has been the one on repeat on my playlist, phone and car. This is one of the early S.P.Balasubramanium songs that I fell in love with as a child. Why? No clue, but its a great song.

Well, excuses aside, here’s a video that’s making its round amongst the social media world. This is the first time I’ve seen one of these, but I’m sure there are more – this is the usual meme of bride/groom shaking their thang down the aisle – but with a Hindu bride… which is unique to me.
Its that time of year, and there are many very tiring, repetitive, boring Christmas songs being played on the radio and malls across the world. This is also the time of year where tv shows occasionally incorporate their own Christmas music into their shows.
In 2006, shortly after Hurricane Katrina devasted the city of New Orleans, the unfortunately short lived NBC TV Show “Studio 60″ ended an episode with a rendition of “O Holy Night” featuring musicians from New Orleans led by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. Over the years this has remained one of few Christmas tracks that got burned onto CD, and now added to my Winter playlist on my iPhone. Hope you enjoy it, and cherish it as much as I did.
NBC also made this song available for download free, as such I am going to have a link to the MP3 available for anyone to download. (If this is a copyright violation, please email me via this website and I will take it down, but I’m assuming since the creators made it available for free, there isn’t a problem with me doing so as well.).
Sony has finally released the 720HD version of the exclusive video of the recording of “Why this Kolaveri Di” shot during the recording of the song with the music composer Anirudh,Dhanush,Shruti Hassan, Aishwarya.

I’ve played this song pretty much non-stop for about a week.
This song is from the film Vaaranam Aayiram, a story about a son’s relationship with his father through the different stages of his life. I’ve always imagined the same bond between my son and myself. In this song, the son has met and fallen in love with the girl he wants to marry. Unfortunatly things don’t end up well for the couple, but seeing the son fall in love and the emotions he goes through – again, I can’t wait for my son to feel this type of love. And hopefully he’ll want to share the experience, talk to me, about it.

Taking a shift away from the usual Tamil music I post about, this song “Letter to my Daughters” by Uncle Kracker . This song is a song to his daughter who when he’s on the road he hardly ever sees. Many a father can relate to this (I’m sure mothers too, but I’m a father, so mothers will need to blog for themselves
I’m lucky in that I have a job that is fairly 9-5 and allows me the flexibility to manage my own time so long as I get my work done. This means I have the luxury of dropping off my kids at school, being there for their lessons, making dinner with them, reading them a bedtime story… and if need be, pick up from school, work from home, etc. But, there are sometimes days, and a couple times since I’ve joined my current employer about 1.5 months where I was going to work before the kids woke up and coming home well after bedtime not getting to see the kids, and more importantly them see me.
This song covers those times – when as a parent you yearn for time with your child(ren), and I’m sure to a much stronger degree they yearn for time with you – and the toll it takes emotionally on you, the father.

This is the one ‘happy’ song I recall from this song. The reason I chose this song tonight is simply, I don’t know why, but I’ve always loved this type of song. The tamil + naatu paatu + disco influenced melody, that is nice and simple, and sticks in your mind.
Not too much to say about this one, I like the song, sought it out and am sharing it with you. Hope you enjoy.
Its safe to say this song, and Chikku Bukku Railu from the same film, defined a generation of Tamil boys. This is the movie that got me back into Tamil music after about 3 years of being indifferent, and I’m ashamed to admit, embarrassed of Tamil music. This song, and the hip-hop/rap song later in the film ‘Chikku Bukku Railu’, made me oddly proud of my music again. If I find a version that includes subtitles, I’ll update the video – but for now for your viewing pleasure please enjoy.
Every night as I’m putting baby girl to sleep, she just won’t fall asleep without music playing and me walking her back and forth – our own father daughter nightly ritual. On my iPod I have a playlist called Bedtime, it started with my son when he was a child, and has grown over the years – now its the playlist baby girl goes to bed with.
This song is one from a film, Siruthai, the song itself is a lullaby, but in the film as its used its a very sad scene.
This is one of those songs with has always been a, I guess, sense of comfort for me. The song itself is a mother singing a lullaby to her baby. It starts with an old man playing a string instrument to the tune of the lullaby. The old man is the lady’s husband, I don’t recall from the movie if he’s also the child’s father. He’s playing the tune when his family (the child in the lullaby and the rest of the extended family come to visit him. (correct me if I”m wrong in the comments… I’m going by a very bad memory from viewing this movie a long long time ago.)
